English Bulldogs Rescues Breeders - Breed description

English Bulldogs have inherited from their bull-baiting predecessors an awe-inspiring and intimidating appearance. They have massive square heads and very strong jaws, which close in a firm and relentless bite. English Bulldogs are not as big as their fathers were, but they have strong and brawny bodies.

Males are 14-16 inches high, and females are 12-14 inches high at the withers. Males weigh 45-55 pounds, and females - 35-45 pounds. English Bulldogs are relatively short-lived, life expectancy not exceeding 8-10 years.

English Bulldogs feature wrinkly muzzles. The head is broad and strong. Eyes are round, and they are set widely apart. They are set low and far from the ears. The ears are small and hanging. The nose is large and black. The lower mandible turns upward in a distinctive fashion. The chest is roomy and deep, and the front paws are rounded and brawny. They are placed well apart, which greatly contributes to the dog's overall sturdiness.

The head is so big, that it seems to outweigh the rest of the body. The back is strong and proportionately curved. The hind paws are set closer to each other than the front paws, and this provides for a stable and solid stand. Coat is short and shining. Skin is wrinkly on the neck and muzzle, generally loose.

Strange as it may be for neophytes, the dog's behavior has nothing in common with its daunting appearance. English Bulldogs are very kind, friendly and good with children. They are even protective around small children. However, it is inadmissible to leave children playing with the dog unsupervised, because such a strong dog may easily knock a toddler over.

The dog has no bull-baiting qualities left, and now it is now a pure house pet. It is easy-going and even-tempered, and can tolerate child-abuse. English Bulldogs are not very active, and they do not require much physical activity. They are not very good in obedience training, because they have a stubborn streak.

Their intimidating look can make potential intruders think well before undertaking a trespass, although, as I have already mentioned, it belies the dog's kind and amusing nature. English Bulldogs are no longer vicious, but they are brave in defending their homes and families against enemies.
