This breed is classified as Molosser or Non-sporting group. It developed in the 16th century for big animals baiting and the whole physical structure of these dogs is designed for this purpose. They can grip the bull’s nose and hang for a long time while the bull is defeated. When bull bating contests were outlawed in England in 1835, the breed was increasingly exported to the USA and Germany. This breed was first registered by the American Kennel Club in 1934.
