It is a well-known principle, that breeders should only produce species in such a way as to generate dogs, who will outdo their parents in quality and behavior, and this works the same way with English Bulldogs. People naturally strive to breed their dogs with famous winning species in pursuit of producing high-quality bulldogs.
However, even if you mate two seemingly flawless dogs, you still cannot be sure the litter is going to be that good. Genetic diversity is a crucial factor in selective breeding, and if you stick to a fixed image of the English Bulldog in your individual project, you may get a disappointing result, because the genetic diversity will be lost.
Many individuals exercise 'home breeding', or mating their dogs with those of their friends. Very often dogs, which are bred this way, develop multiple hereditary deviations, and this may affect the condition of the entire breed. Such amateur breeding cannot ensure the genetic health, because true breeding requires broad and professional knowledge of the subtleties of a very complicated and uncompromising science that is selective breeding.
True breeders must know their every pup to the tiniest detail and be able to clear the intricacies of their dog's genetic and ancestral backgrounds. They also must be well versed in the history of the breed. Qualified breeders demand broad knowledge from potential buyers, and they scan them by asking questions about their attitudes, dog-keeping experience, their homes and families, other pets in the house and so forth.
What a qualified breeder is after is supporting the breed's favorable condition on a global scale. Breeding is not a money-making business; it requires unflagging devotion and professional knowledge. Unfortunately, there are many purported 'puppy-mills', or breeders, who produce vast numbers of pups for the sake of income. Obviously, they care little about English Bulldogs' health, because they consider dog-breeding to be just another way to gain profit.
You must be careful when choosing the breeder to avoid disenchantment. If the breeder is hasty to get his or her puppies off his or her hands, do not buy a puppy from this breeder. Consider another option if you see large quantities of puppies in the house. True breeders have a few puppies. Finally, make sure that the breeder has all necessary AKC registration papers, which entitle him/her to putting English Bulldogs for breeding projects and shows.
